Aleppo Citadel: The Crown Overlooking History

The Citadel of Aleppo sits at the heart of the old city, rising above an artificial mound dating back to the third millennium BC. Over the centuries, it witnessed successive civilizations — from the Arameans to the Romans to the Ayyubids — with every layer of history etched into its stones and inner passages.

What Will You Discover Inside?

After crossing the stone bridge and fortified gate, a vast space opens up, containing the remains of palaces, an ancient mosque, a traditional bathhouse, and secret passages once used for defense. From the top of its walls, you get the best panoramic view of the entire old city of Aleppo, including its covered markets and surrounding minarets.

Tip: Set aside at least two hours for your visit, and start early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds, leaving enough time to enjoy the view from the top.

Practical Information

The citadel sits at the heart of Old Aleppo, close to the historic markets, making it an ideal starting point for a walking tour of the entire old city. Comfortable shoes are recommended, as there are uneven stone steps and passages.
